2009 Cadillac CTS-V undisguised, now in hi-res

Last week, we sent you over to Inside Line to see the undisguised 2009 Cadillac CTS-V as it wound its way down the road for some photographers leading it in a Buick Enclave. Today, we've obtained the hi-res shots ourselves, and have them all lined up in the gallery below for your enjoyment. Recapping the news from last week, you'll see that the V-Series CTS sports a full body kit, a sizable power dome, smaller mesh grilles that are reminiscent of the previous-gen CTS and an updated wheel/tire/brake package. While the lack of the new-style grille is disappointing -- it's really the car's calling card -- there has to be a good reason GM did this.

Automotive X-Prize entries coming to Cobo

The New York Auto Show in March will provide the official venue to launch the Automotive X-Prize contest, but all 43 entrants will be making an advanced appearance next month in Detroit at the North American International Auto show. The teams vying for the Auto X-Prize have to bring a combination of functionality and fuel-efficiency in order to win the substantial chunk of change offered by the organizers.
The picture above is the Aptera, which through the use of either a plug-in gas-electric hybrid or a straight electric setup can get 300 mpg and has the potential of being retailed for less than $30,000.

Mazda Furai concept, 2009 RX-8 to debut

Mazda has released a teaser shot of its Furai concept, which will debut next month in Detroit alongside the "heavily revised" 2009 RX-8. Its name translates from Japanese to "sound of the wind," and the car takes the design language introduced on the Nagare and applies it to what is literally a race-bred sports concept. The Furai, you see, is built atop the Courage C65 chassis that Mazda campaigned two years ago in ALMS. Power comes from a 450-horsepower three-rotor engine that runs on E100 Ethanol. As for the '09 RX-8, Mazda's announcement states only that it boasts an updated design, better quality and features, and improved handling and acceleration. The announcement now has us wondering if the spy photos that came out yesterday are actually the car we'll see in Detroit, and not the 2010 as initially believed. Finally, Detroit will mark the first appearance of the Taiki concept outside Japan. The Taiki, you'll recall, was introduced at the recent Tokyo Motor Show.

Next-gen Honda Pilot prototype to be shown

Honda's big debut at the Detroit Auto Show will be the prototype version of the next-generation Pilot SUV. As was the case with the Accord Coupe Concept shown a year ago, expect to see a very thinly disguised version of the production vehicle. From the rendering above, it looks like Honda's embracing a more Jeep-y, rugged look for its sport ute, which gets new interior packaging and capacity for eight passengers as well. Joining the Pilot proto will be the automaker's L.A. show darlings, the FCX Clarity and CR-Z hybrid concept.

Aston Martin serious about V12 Vantage RS

The Aston Martin V12 Vantage RS we told you about yesterday is the real deal. Though officially referred to as a "Performance Concept Car" during its debut at the opening of Aston Martin's new design center yesterday, it's fully functional like all of Aston's concepts and Ulrich Bez, the automaker's CEO, said if the interest is there, they'll build it. We don't know about you, but we're pretty interested in a 3,527-lbs. car with a race-derived V12 motor producing 600bhp. Performance for the car has been conservatively quoted as 4.0 seconds to 62 mph and 8.5 seconds to 100 mph.

GM scores 4 of 6 finalists in North American OTY awards

Last year General Motors swept the 2007 North American Car and Truck of the Year Awards, with both the Saturn Aura and Chevy Silverado taking home the honors. It looks as if the General has a good shot at repeating last year's sweep with news that four of the six finalists for the 2008 awards are GM vehicles.

The finalists for the 2007 North American Car of the Year award are the Cadillac CTS, Chevy Malibu and Honda Accord, while the truck finalists include the Buick Enclave, Chevy Tahoe Hybrid and the Mazda CX-9. These six vehicles were picked from a lot of 54 new models that went on sale this year, and the winners will be announced on January 13th at the 2008 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

Production Camaro sans Zebra stripes

Since the original Camaro concept hit NAIAS in January 2006, it seems like we've been living with (and writing about) the pony coupe forever. The fact is, we still haven't seen the Camaro's final production duds. Until now, kind of. The Camaro5 website has posted on its forums a near-naked Chevy Pony car in production sheet metal. The front and rear are wearing padded underwear, but we can see from the side-view pic that the basic shape stays true to the stunning concepts of 2006 and 2007. Missing are the three slotted vents ahead of the rear wheel wells, but it looks like some ribbed metal takes its place.

Land Rover LRX unveiled, courtesy of Auto Motor und Sport

The Land Rover LRX is set for a big Detroit debut next month, but you can see it now thanks to German enthusiast mag Auto Motor und Sport. They have thoughtfully posted a full photo gallery of the shortened, lowered Freelander-based Land Rover coupe concept, and thanks to the broken English provided by Google Translate, we can report some of the highlights, as well. The compact SUV boasts long doors and an athletic stance accentuated by a sloping roof, 20" wheels, and a somewhat sinister looking front fascia.

How about a Republican debate at the Detroit Auto Show?

Looks like the '08 Detroit Show could be a lot more interesting than normal, as the Michigan GOP is working to have NAIAS be the venue for (yet another) presidential debate, this one featuring the Republican candidates, obviously. The idea would be to highlight the Detroit automakers and to have the debate take a decidedly Michigan-oriented focus. Have there been too many debates already? Yes, for both sides. It's ridiculous, and they seem to get progressively worse with each new one. That said, if this actually does go down the way the Michigan Republicans want it to, we plan on being part of the attendant media circus.

Every angle of the Land Rover LRX

In case you missed it yesterday, the Land Rover LRX is the SUV coupe concept the British marque will introduce next month in Detroit. Based on the Freelander, it's shorter, lower, and exceptionally slick-looking. That goes for the interior, too, which uses ambient lighting to communicate what drive mode the truck's in. Red's for sport, green's for off-road, and blue's for normal. Here's hoping that somewhere, a green light's being lit regarding a production version as well.
